Desde hace miles de años han estado presentes en nuestras vidas. Solían ser de piel y pelajes de animales.  Los romanos las usaban en los mercados y espectáculos callejeros, en las celebraciones tanto públicas como privadas; en el circo, en las ferias de ganados..

Hoy son de lino o algodón. Las vemos dentro y fuera de la casa. El espacio que cobijan se convierte en un espacio mágico e íntimo. Es el escondite y refugio de niños y viajeros, de bañistas, de vendedores ambulantes… Aportan calidez y estética a  playas, terrazas y jardines; a  los cuartos y las camas de los niños…

Me vienen al a memoria los toldos en la playa de Cádiz cuando era pequeña. Aun recuerdo a los tolderos al caer la tarde, recogiéndolos cuando ya apenas quedaba gente en la playa. Recuerdo los colores estridentes, las rayas...

Me vienen también a la mente las casetas rojas y blancas, y las verdes y blancas de la feria de Sevilla… y las del circo;  los  mercadillos navideños de Berlín durante los días de Adviento; el mercado de las pulgas de Paris; las casas improvisadas de los nómadas de la India;  las jaimas en  el Sahara, los tipis de los apaches. Y es que fueron ellos los que las inventaron...

Nos protegen del sol y la lluvia, del frío y del calor, de la gente y del mundo exterior del que muchos, a ratos, necesitamos alejarnos…

Another things than comes to my mind are the  red and white casetas at Seville's cattle fair, and the green and white ones ... and the circus; the  flea markets in Berlin during the days of Advent, the flea market of Paris, and the portable homes of nomadic people in India, the  portable tents in  the Sahara, the tepees of the Apaches.  They were the first ones to make them.

They protect us from sun and rain, from cold and heat, from the outside world  that,  from time to time, we need to get away  from... They
